Katy Perry..........................Katy Perry original name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, (born October 25 1984 Santa Barbara California U.S.) American pop singer who gained fame for a string of anthemic and often sexually suggestive hit songs as well as for a playfully cartoonish sense of style. Perry's initial efforts at fame in the mainstream were unsuccessful, with two separate record labels signing and then dropping her before she had any new material released. Capitol Records did release Perry's Ur So Gay, which garnered modest attention in 2007 because of its humorous title. I Kissed a Girl, a confident song about her sexual inclinations set against a hard-edged electronic-pop beat, made a bigger splash several months after. The track quickly caused controversy as some critics derided the song for encouraging sexual relations between gays and lesbians while others claimed that the racy scenario that it depicted was a sly way to appeal to men's fantasies about sexuality among females. Nevertheless the combination of sensuality and polished music helped I Kissed a Girl become the number one song in a variety of countries and drove sales for her album One of the Boys (2008). Its bouncy, sharp-tongued and bouncy song, the second Hot N Cold also proving to be a hit, the album which Perry created herself ultimately registered sales of more than 3 million copies across the United States.
