Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72 years old in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay was introduced to art from the aunt Denise. Her aunt worked the night shift as nurse so she could follow her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was socially conscious and taught her how to make use of the arts as a way of expression. Even though DuVernay lived living in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama was later the inspiration to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990 she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a student. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the waste belonging to one of the juries. As a result of her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the publicity business. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
